Argan Oil is a scarce resource, native to Morocco. On top of that its extraction is highly labor intensive. It could take up to 8 hours to extract just one liter of Argan Oil. Adding transportation and importation cost makes it one of the most expensive resource to obtain. Its called "liquid gold" for a reason. A cheap 100 ml bottle for 1500-2000 Rs might sound like a good deal, but you might be better off investing your money elsewhere than buying cheap Argan Oil.
However, expensive Argan Oil doesn't always mean its pure. You might just be paying for extensive marketing or attractive packaging.
Read on to learn what other factors distinguish authentic Argan Oil from unauthentic.
The ingredients listed on Argan Oil Bottle must be very precise. It should either say 100% Pure Argan or 100% Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil. Anything else means it might be something doubtful.
3. THE SCENT
Argan Oil could have four different type of scents.
- Strong-smelling Argan Oil that smells absolutely awful
- Fragrant smell that makes you wanna eat it immediately
- Smells like absolutely nothing
- Aromatic nutty smell
You should always look for the fourth type.
Strong smelling oil might be rancid. No smell might mean that it has gone rancid while fragrant Argan Oil is probably meant for culinary use so be careful. If it smells absolutely nothing, It could be entirely fake or at least diluted. It may have gone through a deodorization process, making it lose its essential properties. You should always look for aromatic nutty smell. Genuine hand-pressed argan oil will vary with different batches, different seasons will bring different strength of smell.
If you do get a bottle that is a bit more aromatic, after a couple of days you become used to the scent and know what results the use of this oil brings, so you savour that raw, green, nutty aroma. Even if you never learn to love that smell, the scent always disappears after a few minutes on your skin, as true Argan Oil absorbs so quickly and beautifully.
With that being said, the scent could differ with seasons. Some batches will have a lighter essence, sometimes it is a quite a bit more aromatic.
5. COLOR AND TEXTUREArgan Oil should be smooth and silky. It should disappear in your skin a lot quicker than most other oils. It shouldn't give a slimy or sticky feeling neither it should sting when applied.
6. COUNTRY OF ORIGIN
Argan oil is highly scarce resource produced solely in Morocco. Due to a rise in popularity of Argan Oil a lot of suppliers have jumped in on the bandwagon. Argan Oil is bought in small quantities from Morocco, mixed with other vegetable oil and then sold as 100% Pure Argan Oil. Argan Oil that is sourced from other countries than Morocco might also have relatively smaller shelf life.
Just a heads up, there is no such thing as Chinese Argan Oil. Always look for "Made in Morocco" label when buying your Argan Oil.
